Practical composite manufacturing, built around your production needs

The Composites Company is a GRP manufacturer specialising in repeat production, product development and responsive manufacturing support.

We help businesses turn ideas into reliable, production-ready components. A project can begin with detailed CAD data, an existing component or even a simple drawing on a piece of paper. Our team will help develop the most practical route from the initial concept through to tooling, manufacture, assembly, finishing and delivery.

Our approach is driven by a straightforward objective, manufacture high quality GRP components efficiently, consistently and at a commercially sensible cost.

A complete GRP manufacturing service

Where required, we can manage the entire project from start to finish. Our capabilities include:

  • Product and manufacturing development

  • Pattern and mould making

  • Modifications and repairs to existing tooling

  • Hand lay-up

  • RTM and LRTM

  • Prototype and one-off production

  • Repeat-component manufacturing

  • Integration of reinforcements, inserts and other features

  • Component and subassembly work

  • High-quality finishing and polishing

  • Multi-stage inspection

  • Packing and UK delivery

Customers can use our complete service or approach us for an individual stage of an existing project.

From an initial idea to repeat production

We support projects at every stage of development, including prototypes, one-off components and repeat production. Our principal focus is repeat manufacturing for businesses that require a dependable supply of consistent GRP parts.

Production capacity depends on the component’s size, specification, manufacturing method and required output.

For suitable contracted projects, we can support higher-volume production and help customers respond to significant increases in demand.

If you are unsure whether your component or required quantity is suitable, speak to our team. We can assess the project and provide realistic guidance based on your requirements.

Mould and pattern making

Good production begins with suitable tooling. We can manufacture a wide range of GRP moulds and undertake modifications to existing tools when a component or production process needs to be improved.

Smaller patterns can be produced internally using 3D printing or three-axis CNC machining. For larger or more specialised patterns, we work with trusted external partners selected for their capability and cost-effectiveness.

Our tooling service can support:

  • New product development

  • Moulds produced from drawings or CAD data

  • Moulds developed from existing components

  • Split and multi-part moulds

  • Modifications to established tooling

  • Repairs and ongoing improvements

  • Tooling developed for repeat production

By considering production requirements at the tooling stage, we can identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary finishing, improve repeatability and make manufacturing more efficient.

High-quality GRP finishing

Based in the heart of Plymouth, an area with a strong marine and composites heritage, we have access to highly experienced GRP finishers.

We can provide carefully finished and polished components for applications where appearance matters. The required finish is discussed at the beginning of the project, allowing the tooling, gelcoat and manufacturing process to be planned accordingly.

We offer gelcoat finishes in a wide variety of colours and normally work from recognised RAL colour references. For repeat production, we recommend agreeing a standard colour before manufacturing begins. Changes after production has commenced may involve additional setup, materials and cost.

Dark colours—particularly black—can reveal minor surface variations more readily and may require considerably more finishing work. We will provide honest advice where a colour choice could affect the finish, production time or overall cost.

We do not generally provide colour-restoration services, but we are happy to discuss finishing requirements as part of a new manufacturing project.

Continuous production improvement

Manufacturing a successful repeat product is not simply about making the same component again and again. We continually look for sensible ways to improve both the part and its production process.

Our main areas of focus include:

  • Reducing component weight

  • Improving surface finish

  • Increasing consistency between parts

  • Reducing unnecessary material usage and waste

  • Making production more efficient

  • Maintaining quality as quantities increase

We combine practical shop-floor experience with appropriate new materials, tooling methods and production technologies. Improvements are considered carefully so that efficiency does not come at the expense of component quality or performance.

This production-led approach also allows us to support customers during demanding periods, including tight deadlines and unexpected increases in demand.

Quality checked at every stage

Every component passes through a structured snagging and inspection process before it leaves our facility.

Quality is checked progressively by the people responsible for each stage of production. This includes the laminator, finisher, production management and dispatch team. Each person has an opportunity to identify imperfections or concerns before the component is packed for transport.

This multi-stage approach helps us maintain:

  • A consistent surface finish

  • Correctly completed assembly work

  • Repeatability across production batches

  • Careful presentation and packing

  • Accountability throughout production

If an issue is identified, it is addressed before the component is approved for dispatch.

Supporting marine, leisure and wider industry

Our principal experience is within the marine and leisure sectors, where finish, durability and dependable production are especially important.

However, our capabilities are not limited to these markets. We welcome enquiries from any business requiring a prototype, production-ready GRP component or reliable repeat-manufacturing partner.

The most important consideration is whether we can provide a technically suitable and cost-effective manufacturing solution.

UK delivery and collection

Completed parts can be delivered to customers throughout the UK for an agreed fee. Customer collection from our Plymouth facility is also available.

Packing and transport requirements are considered according to the component’s size, finish and vulnerability, helping protect completed parts while they are being handled and transported.

Discuss your GRP manufacturing requirements

Whether you have a simple sketch, an existing component, established tooling or a repeat product requiring additional manufacturing capacity, The Composites Company can help identify a practical way forward.

Speak to our team about:

  • A new GRP component

  • Prototype development

  • Repeat production

  • Mould and pattern making

  • Existing tooling modifications

  • Improving an established component

  • Assembly and finishing

  • Additional or urgent production capacity

Send us your drawings, photographs, component details or initial ideas, and we will review your requirements.

Component size and production capacity

We can consider components of many different sizes. The practical limit depends on the component’s dimensions, tooling, manufacturing method and the production space required.

Larger components must be assessed to ensure that occupying the necessary production area remains commercially viable for both parties. Production quantities are considered in the same way: capacity depends on the individual component and its manufacturing requirements rather than a fixed minimum or maximum quantity.

Contact us with your drawings, anticipated quantities and timescales, and we will assess the available options.
